Within this interactive documentary, my objective is to shed light on the misrepresentation of Iraq and Iraqis in Hollywood films, which have perpetuated Orientalist stereotypes, falsely associating them with Muslim and Arabic attributes that do not align with reality. I am determined to present the authentic narrative of Iraq and its people, effectively challenging the negative portrayals perpetuated by mainstream cinema.

 

The design structure of this i-doc comprises three distinct segments:

 

• Hollywood's Orientalist Representations:

In this section, I curate montages from Hollywood films that serve as prime examples of the Orientalist stereotypes attributed to Iraq and its people. Through this analysis, I aim to demonstrate these stereotypes' extensive and enduring influence on the global perception of Iraq.

• The Impact of Hollywood on Iraq and Iraqis:

Acting as a bridge between the initial and final sections, this part delves deeper into the repercussions of Hollywood's misrepresentations. I explore how these stereotypes have affected perceptions and attitudes by conducting interviews with Iraqi participants, providing valuable insights.

• Iraqis Producing Their Own Stories:

In the concluding segment, I endeavour to counter Hollywood's stereotypes by giving a platform to Iraqis. Iraqis share their stories, culture, and experiences through their narratives and self-representation. This approach aims to offer a more accurate, empowering, and diverse portrayal of Iraq.
